(New York, January 23, 2001) On his first business day in office, President George W. Bush flouted free expression by reinstating a U.S. government policy, known alternatively as
the Mexico City Policy and the Global Gag Rule, that requires international women's health advocates to sacrifice their right to free expression in exchange for U.S. funding.

"By issuing this executive order, President Bush undermines the principle of free expression that has been and should be a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy," said
Regan Ralph, executive director of the Women's Rights Division of Human Rights Watch. "U.S. aid should be used to promote human rights, not to undermine the free exercise of a core human right."

This restriction, first adopted by President Reagan in 1984 and announced during a population conference in Mexico City, prohibits international nongovernmental family planning organizations from receiving U.S. funds if, with their own separate funds, they engage in legal abortion-related activities, including talking with clients about abortion, disseminating information about abortion, or engaging in advocacy to change or reform abortion laws. By putting at risk these organizations'
ability to serve their clients, this policy curtails their ability to offer all appropriate medical care and fully exercise their right to free expression.

"Reinstating the Mexico City Policy makes the Bush administration look as if it is committed, not to principles of free expression, but to buying off dissent and stifling open debate," added Ralph.

Human Rights Watch urged the Bush administration to rescind the executive order that prevents international family planning organizations from receiving U.S. humanitarian aid if they are using separate funds to engage in free expression activities related to reproductive health care that includes abortion.

Here we go... This is major... A country tailspinning back to illegal 'back-alley' abortions, women treated as second class fucking citizens with fewer personal rights and less & less resources, both clinical and educational, leading to uninformed, dangerous, desperate decisions. No exaggeration. Just a truly frightening prospect for us ALL.

Bush is an ignorant, despicable fuck. However, he is only one of many to
denounce.. the public figurehead.

I have my own personal spirituality, far from traditional religion, so I can only say in a forum like this.. may some Divine Being intercede... What a tragedy, what a detriment to women. The evil of politics *sigh* It really makes one feel helpless. BUT it ain't over yet..

Hey snail...your grasp of intelligent debate astounds me. All dramatics and fear mongering aside, I hope you don't ever have to drive a gangrenous or haemorraging female friend of yours to the hospital as a result of some back street butchers job. I hate political threads such as this, especially when it involves an issue such as abortion. Everyone has their own beliefs on this issue, and in most cases feel so strongly about what and how they believe, that the debate doesnt stay civil long.....so with that in mind, I'll keep my opinions on the abortion issue to myself.

What I would like to bring up is, Bush is replacing a president who lied under oath, people defend him by saying he lied about his PRIVATE life, but.....private or not, lying under oath is a crime....I wouldnt get away with it, and neither would any of you.....why is the leader of our country allowed to.....be it lying about fucking around on the job or not? Isnt he supposed to be of high moral standards and set SOME kind of example??? Fine....he cheated on his wife, abused his position my messing around with the intern....but....LYING...UNDER OATH???? If it was that trival....that people can defend him by saying, "It was JUST sex...." why not admit to it, BEFORE committing perjury??

Not only is Bush a pin-brained control freak but he seems intent on surrounding himself with like minded idots.

Bush's nominee for attorney general John Ashcroft has sponsored a human life amendment to the constitution. The amendment would outlaw abortion completely, even in cases of rape and incest. And as senator, he voted for the child custody protection act that would have made it a crime for family members to help teenagers cross state lines to have an abortion.

Bush's first day in office happened to be the 28th anniversary of the Roe v Wade, the historic Supreme court judgment that enshrined women's right to abortion, he didn't waste much time in chipping away at that right.

Banning abortion or education programmes won't make unplanned pregnancies or backstreet abortions go away. It's like ignoring a tumour that you find growing somewhere, it just silently grows.

And to answer 2CUTES post...it's just a debate on a hostboard, everyone has their right to say whatever they want...it's no big deal and it's kinda intersting to see everyones position on any given subject even if you don't agree with what they have to say.

Did I mention I hate Mondays??
